¡Bienvenidos! Join us for a festival of nations. Use your passports and take a trip into each culture. Booths will be set up and participants will be able to learn a little about each county that is represented in this Día program. El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día, is a celebration every day of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures. The common goals of all Día programming are to:·         Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries.·         Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child's home language and culture.·         Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies. ·         Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.

Macy Kalb from the the Vigo County YMCA is joining us to offer Kids Yoga. This program is designed to honor children's more active energy levels. Movement during class alternates between active and calm to keep young yogis' attention. Music, dancing, and games are all incorporated as kids learn basic yoga poses and even breathing and relaxation techniques that they can use during their normal, daily routines. For safety, please make sure children wear shoes with non-slip bottoms.

Shakespeare's plays and poems abound with flowers and gardens. Join VCPRD Naturalist, Amber Slaughterbeck, as we visit the beauty of planting your own Shakespeare garden. Discussion includes garden design, plant uses, and wildlife benefits. Advanced Master Gardener, Marilyn Miller, will elaborate on plant selections and showcase flowers from the Apple House. Participate in our Rose Raffle for a chance to win!

Join the Special Collections Department and the Vigo County Historical Society for a reception showcasing the Historical Society's "Read All About It!" newspaper exhibition. The exhibition, made possible by a grant provided by the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and a sponsorship by the Tribune Star Publishing Company, allows visitors to see history unfold right before their eyes through the pages of local newspapers. Tribune Star columnist and author Mike Lunsford will speak of how easy it is to see history through newspapers, and he will also have copies of his book The Bridge That Carries You Over available for purchase. Light refreshments will be provided.

With the help of the community, the Pinwheels for Peace art project will consist of over 300 pinwheels, to be displayed at the VCPL September 21-29 with an opening reception at the Library on International Peace Day, September 21, 5-6 pm. Refreshments will be served. The installation will also be available for viewing at ISU's Homecoming Festivities in Tent City at Memorial Stadium on October 1.

Gather around for storytime with Naturalist Amber Slaughterbeck, create endangered species masks, and watch a short movie to learn the importance of protecting endangered species and everyday actions you can take to help protect wildlife. This program is offered at both locations of the Vigo County Public Library.
