Content and Scope of Collection
This collection consists of a “program” in the form of a newspaper for a Vigo County Historical Society exhibit called “Vigo County Newspapers - First Draft of Local History”.
The exhibit which ran from February 1988 to June 1988 was created as part of Hoosier Celebration '88, a statewide effort introduced by Governor Robert Orr in his 1985 inaugural address for the purpose of promoting Hoosier pride. Terre Haute called its promotional effort “Celebrate Terre Haute”. The program was distributed to visitors to the Vigo County Historical Society and Museum.
The newspaper includes an historical overview of Indiana newspapers by the executive director of the Vigo County Historical Society; a reprint of the July 21, 1823 edition of the Western Register & Terre Haute Advertiser; and a reprint of a bibliography of newspapers published in Vigo County from 1823 to 1980.
