Content and Scope of Collection

John H. O'Boyle, an early settler who arrived in Terre Haute in 1849, spent his adult life here as a dealer in leather and real estate. He served a term on the city council and was on the board of directors of two banks. He was also a trustee of the Rose Orphan Home and of the Terre Haute public school system. He was treasurer of the school board for many years.

The papers in this collection were in the possession of his daughter, Frances (Fanny), who was married to A. Z. Foster, a prominent retail merchant. They eventually passed into the hands of O'Boyle's son, John H. O'Boyle, of Indianapolis.
